At the end of this video there is a quote by the great anthropologist Margaret Mead:
Never doubt, that a small group of thoughtful committed people can change the world. In fact it is the only thing that ever has.
I first read this Mead quote in the mid 90´s on one of my first journeys to the USA. I loved eating “Ben & Jerry´s Ice Cream” and read through their company brochures in one of their parlors in Georgetown Washington D.C. I still have and sometimes read their brochures about their concept of “caring capitalism“. The second proverb I remember from my visit to their shop is: “If it´s not fun, why do it?“. It was very popular among me and my friends at that time. On one of my later journeys I visited the Ben & Jerry´s factory in Burlington, Vermont including a cemetery for Ice Cream Flavors no longer produced. Today Ben & Jerry´s is no longer owned by its founders. They sold it to Unilever. So there Vision is just a brand of onoe of those multinationals.
A brand is not a mission. But that is a different story.

In fact it is the only thing that ever has”. Dieser Spruch ist von Margaret Mead. Das wiederum weiss ich durch einen Besuch in den Eiscreme Salons der beiden Vermonter Freaks Ben & Jerry. Vor vielen Jahren in Washington DC. Ein spannendes Konzept, ihr “caring capitalism“, was sie leider nicht daran gehindert hat, das Ganze an Unilever zu verkaufen, wo die Vision der Gründer doch arg zu blosser Markenpolitik degeneriert.
Im Moment schaue ich kaum Fernsehen. Deshalb weiss ich nicht so genau, ob der Terror der Werbespots zum Valentins Tag schon wieder begonnen hat. Auf Anhieb fallen mir Ferrero, Douglas und Fleurop ein, die noch jedes Fest, jede menschliche Regung in eine Konsumorgie verwandeln wollen. Nächste Gelegenheit: nämlicher Valentinstag (14. Februar). Doch nun regt sich Widerstand gegen diese Konsummafia. Seit einigen Monaten verfolge ich interessiert die Aktionsformen der Rebell Clowns um C.I.R.C.A. Gerade trifft über deren Newsletter die Einladung zur Veranstaltung “Reclaim Love” am 16. Februar 2006 auf dem Londoner Picadilly Circus ein. Die Aktion wird vorbereitet von O-I-L. Diese Abkürzung steht sowohl für “Operation Infinite Love” als auch für: “One In Love”. Also (hoffentlich) auch für Sie.
I am looking for an excuse for a trip to London since a while already. This morning I might have got one. In my mailbox is the invitation to join “Reclaim Love” right beyond the Eros Statue on Piccadilly Circus. I guess it is a nice idea to reclaim Love from all the Multinationals that want to tell us we have to buy their prefabricated gifts to express our love. The event is organized by O-I-L. This abbreviation stands for “Operation Infinite Love” and for “One In Love”. So: (hopefully) for you!
Für mich ist James Nachtwey der Chronist der Katastrophen unserer Zeit. Ob meiner Affinität zur Menschheitskatastrophe Shoah / NS-Verfolgung ein Seelenverwandter. Drei meiner nächsten Verwandten machen Bilder, Filme und Photos besser und professioneller als ich das je können werde. Bilder von Sohn Paul haben diesen Blog von Beginn bereichert. Auch mein Bruder und Neffe leben für Bilder. Es gibt einen einzigen Film, den wir vier uns gemeinsam angeschaut haben: “War Photographer” von Christian Frei. Zwei Brüder mit ihren Söhnen gebannt vor dem Fernseher in der Kölner Maternusstrasse, die Welt durch Nachtweys Sucher sehend. Mehr als drei Jahre dürfte das her sein.
Wenige Tage vor Weihnachten entdeckte ich die Seite von TED. Die Abkürzung steht ursprünglich für “Technologie, Entertainment, Design“. Begonnen hat TED 1984. Die jährliche Konferenz lädt die “faszinierendsten Denker und Macher” ein, in exakt 18 Minuten ihre Botschaft vorzustellen. Ausserdem verleiht TED jährlich an drei Persönlichkeiten den mit je $100.000 ausgestatteten TED-Preis. Jede(r) der PreisträgerInnen formuliert ausserdem “einen Wunsch, die Welt zu verändern….“.
Im Jahr 2007 war James Nachtwey einer dieser TED - Preisträger. In seinem Wunsch bittet er um Hilfe, “eine aktuelle, (bisher unerzählte) Geschichte, die die Welt kennen sollte, zu dokumentieren und auf digitalem Wege zu verbreiten.
James Nachtwey to me is the chronicler of current catastrophes. He is a soul mate although I never met him in person. Three of my closest relatives are shooting films and photos much better than I ever will. Photographs by my son Paul have accompanied this blog from its very beginning. But my brother and nephew live for pictures too. I remember one documentary only that the four of us watched jointly: “War Photographer” by Christian Frei. My brother and I plus our two sons banned by the TV-screen in our Cologne flat watching the world through Nachtweys view-finder. That must have been more than three years ago.
A few days before Christmas I discovered the TED website. TED stands for “Technology, Entertainment, Design“. The annual TED - conference assembles the most fascinating doers and thinkers of our times and challenged to give the talk of their lives (in 18 minutes). On these conferences the TED - Price is awarded to three exceptional individuals. They each receive $100,000 and, much more important, the granting of “One Wish to Change the World.”
In 2007 James Nachtwey of these three laureates. His wish: “gaining access to a story that needs to be told, and developing a new, digital way to show these photos to the world.”

Noch wenige Stunden, und das Jahr 2007 ist zu Ende.
Man kann sich ja all den Rückblicken und Jahresbilanzen gar nicht entziehen. Genau so wenig dem eigenen Drang, noch einmal zurück zu schauen.
Eben habe ich auf der Rückfahrt von Köln in die Eifel laut gelacht.
Das kommt immer mal wieder, aber auch längst nicht jeden Tag vor.
Dabei sollte man hinter dem Titel

We all suffer from information overload. So we only skip the headlines of many of our emails. Today I was fortunate enough to open an email that usually I never would have read. Best wishes for 2008 from TrafficHoopla. Have a look at their website, it is a great help if you build traffic.
But this has nothing to do with their new years greeting. I could not even find it on their page. I will shoot them an email to find out whether these traffic wizards really expressed their own thoughts or used some ancient source. Stay tuned and now without a further a do:
Holy Grail / Fountain of Youth?
Many people who came before you searched for success and never
found it. They genuinely thought of it as the Holy Grail or the
Fountain of Youth - something to be captured at the end of a long
quest. Some believed it was a relationship to be won. Other
supposed it was a desired position to be earned or an object to be
possessed.
However, success is none of those things. It’s not a destination to
be reached. It is a process - a journey to be taken. Moreover, you
do it one day at a time.
It needs most people some time to discover what they were created
for. If you are willing, you can explore the world and constantly
learn more about your purpose every day. You can engage in
activities that gradually help you grow a little more in mind,
body, or spirit. In addition, you can perform some act - large or
small - that generously helps others.
Success is knowing your purpose in life, sowing seeds that benefit
others, and growing to your maximum potential.
The door to your potential is waiting for you. The key is to be on
the journey. Keep at it day in and day out. If you are, you’re a
success today. Furthermore, you’ll be a success tomorrow.
